San Diego Fires: Where Sustainable Buildings Help

Our home has been on the border of evacuation from the fires in San Diego. I'm very thankful we've been able to stay inside and hope for the best for the 500,000 plus San Diegans evacuated from their homes.

We are currently having an energy crisis as power links are being burned. I just went outside to check on the air quality and saw that our solar system was going strong and we were actually putting power back into the system (this with six people actively working on computers and watching news update on TV). It really brings home the fact that green or sustainable buildings are better situated in times of crisis.

Read your comment on how the solar power in your home was helping to put energy back into the system during the fires.

I know of a woman who lives in the San Pasqual Valley area, whose home was just skirted by the fire that swept through, but she was blessed enough that it ended up going right around her. She and her husband have no power running to their home; they subsist entirely on solar energy, and not once did they lose power during the whole event.

I would LOVE to live in that solar-powered, sustainable apartment complex in Poway. (I understand they completely sold out before they even opened, and have a waiting list about the length of the I-5.)
